On the Mark: WHGS Scoops Top Sporting Award

          Wednesday, 6 November 2019

William Hulme’s Grammar School (WHGS) is celebrating after achieving the School Games Silver Mark Award for the 2018/19 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust, to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the local community.

WHGS was given this prestigious award for its exceptional sporting offer which includes an incredibly wide range of sports.  From football, netball and rugby to badminton, skateboarding and yoga, the school offers sporting activities to meet every student’s abilities and interests.

The school calendar is brimming with fixtures of competitions taking place within school and against other local schools.  All sporting successes are celebrated within school and each year group has its own Health and Wellbeing Ambassadors who promote sport and healthy lifestyles amongst their peers.

Rachel Clayden, Subject Lead PE at WHGS, said:

“We are delighted to have achieved this award for the third year in a row.  Sport is such a central part of WHGS and it is fantastic that so many students are actively involved in our extracurricular clubs and teams.  We would not be able to offer students such a wide range of high-quality sports without our fantastic PE staff who are out in all-weathers with our teams giving them the very best training possible.

“Our sporting offer is a key way in which we deliver an Education with Character.  We constantly strive to give our students an education with nurtures team spirit, perseverance and the confidence to always challenge themselves.  Sport does exactly this and more and it is wonderful to see the way in which our students are developing into confident, ambitious and determined young adults.

“Whilst we are really buoyed to have achieved the Silver Award again, our sights are now firmly set on achieving the coveted Gold Award next year!”
